How To Use Matcha For Baking

Matcha, a finely ground powder made from green tea leaves, is not only a popular ingredient for making traditional tea but also a versatile ingredient for baking. Its vibrant green color and unique flavor can add a delightful twist to your baked goods. In this blog post, we will explore different ways to use matcha for baking and provide you with some delicious recipes to try.

1. Matcha Powder

The first step in using matcha for baking is to choose a high-quality matcha powder. Look for a bright green color and a smooth texture. Avoid matcha powders that are dull or have a yellowish tint, as they may not provide the desired flavor and color.

Recipe: Matcha Green Tea Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon matcha powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg yolk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour and matcha powder.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the salt and egg yolk to the butter mixture and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix until just combined.
  6. Roll the dough into small balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

2. Matcha Latte

Another way to incorporate matcha into your baking is by making a matcha latte. You can use this delicious beverage as a flavoring for cakes, cupcakes, or even frosting.

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk and matcha latte. Begin and end with the flour mixture.
  7. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners.
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the muffin tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
